Second Novel

Absent

American edition (hard cover)
The American University In Cairo Press
Cairo, 2005.

Set in a crowded apartment building in Baghdad in the 1990s, Absent tells the story of Dalal, a young woman living with the childless aunt and uncle who raised her. Dalal and her neighbors try to maintain normal lives, despite the crippling effect of bombings and international sanctions on their world.

Affectionate, wry, and darkly comical, Absent paints a moving portrait of resourceful individuals struggling to get by in impossible circumstances.

Tightly crafted and skillfully told, Absent is a haunting portrait of life under sanctions, the fragile emotional ties between individuals, and, ultimately, the resilience of the human spirit.

"A FASCINATING BOOK AND A GREAT PLEASURE TO READ: BETOOL KHEDAIRI IS A TALENTED NEW VOICE IN FICTION."

ALAA AL ASWANY, AUTHOR OF THE YACOUBIAN BUILDING

"Absent is an important book in the way that The Grapes of Wrath and The Kite Runner are important books. Betool Khedairi performs the miraculous feat of transforming Iraq from an abstraction into a world populated by real people devastated by the intrusions of an empire on the other side of the globe."

SARAH BIRD, author of The Flamenco Academy

"Brilliant, funny, and disturbing, Absent portrays an unforgettable struggle for dignity in a world under siege."

TERESA CARPENTER, author of The Miss Stone Affair

"This novel is not just about Iraq; it is about childhood, racism, despair, the abyss between East and West, and, above all, how to succeed in surpassing these, using a crucial survival kit: love, the pursuit of freedom, art, resilience. All of this comes to us in a modern, captivating style from a fresh, new voice in Arab literature."
